Ireland: your Foreign Births Registration preparation guide
Foreign Births Registration can establish Irish citizenship for qualifying people born abroad with an Irish-born grandparent or a parent who was Irish when they were born. A passport is a separate later application. A parent born in Ireland may instead establish existing citizenship; confirm the correct route before paying.

Distinguish existing citizenship from registration
A parent born in Ireland who was Irish at your birth may mean you are already a citizen. A grandparent or parent born abroad may require FBR. Check the official category and family dates before ordering records.

Build the family evidence chain
Match names and dates across your documents and the transmitting family line. Order the civil records required for your exact category; keep name changes and naturalisation/FBR dates visible.

Application · 1 steps
Complete, witness and post the official application
Use the official online application, pay its current fee, then follow its printed witness and document-posting instructions. Keep your application reference and delivery evidence. Do not send a passport application in the same envelope.

After approval · 1 steps
After registration, apply separately for a passport
The citizenship milestone is registration in the FBR. When your registration certificate arrives, check its details and use the official passport process. This stage does not require a move to Ireland.

Keep the citizenship timeline for future children
If transmission depends on your FBR registration, the date of registration relative to a future child’s birth matters. Confirm that child’s correct nationality route before making an application.

Confirm before acting
- This is a preparation guide, not an eligibility decision. Adoption, complex parentage, earlier generations and disputed records need the authority’s case-specific advice.
- Passport issuance, processing time and any future child’s citizenship are separate from approval of your own FBR application.
