Portugal Digital Nomad Visa 2026 — Complete Guide
Who qualifies
You need to prove stable income from remote work or freelancing of at least EUR 3,280 per month (four times the Portuguese minimum wage). This can be a combination of employment contracts, freelance clients or business income — it does not have to be from a single source.
You also need health insurance valid in Portugal, a clean criminal record, and accommodation (rental contract or proof of purchase).
The two routes
There are two versions of the D8: a temporary stay visa (valid up to one year, for those who want to try Portugal before committing) and a residence visa (which leads directly to a residence permit valid two years, renewable for three). Most people who plan to stay longer than a year apply for the residence visa route.
NHR tax regime
Portugal's Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime — now called IFICI or NHR 2.0 — provides significant tax benefits for new residents. Qualifying remote workers pay a flat 20% tax on Portuguese-source income for 10 years. Foreign-source income may be exempt entirely depending on the tax treaty with your home country. Get proper tax advice before applying — the benefits are real but the rules are specific.
Processing time
At the Portuguese consulate in your home country: 2–3 months on average, though some consulates are faster. The SEF (now AIMA) appointment for the residence permit after arrival: 3–6 months wait in Lisbon, faster in Porto and other cities.
Key cities
Lisbon and Porto are the most popular but also the most expensive. The Algarve (Faro, Lagos) is a strong choice for those wanting lower cost of living. The Azores and Madeira both have specific digital nomad programmes with additional incentives.
Cost of living
Lisbon: EUR 1,800–2,500/month for a comfortable life. Porto: EUR 1,400–2,000/month. Interior cities like Braga or Coimbra: EUR 1,000–1,500/month.
Verdict
Portugal's D8 is one of the best digital nomad visas in the world — stable EU country, excellent internet infrastructure, English widely spoken, strong expat community, and a clear path to permanent residence and citizenship after 5 years. The NHR tax regime makes the financial case even stronger.
