Malta Digital Nomad Visa 2026 — EU Residency From EUR 2,700/Month
Income requirements
You need to earn at least EUR 2,700 per month (approximately EUR 32,400/year) from remote employment or freelancing. Income must come from outside Malta. You need health insurance valid in Malta and accommodation (rental or owned).
Application process
Apply online through Residency Malta Agency. Processing time: approximately 30 days. Required documents: employment contract or freelance client evidence, last 3 months payslips or invoices, bank statements, health insurance policy, rental agreement or property ownership proof.
Why Malta
English is an official language — the only EU country alongside Ireland where English is a first language for most residents. Excellent weather (300+ sunny days per year). Strong internet infrastructure. EU membership means Schengen travel and potential path to EU citizenship. The Maltese are genuinely welcoming to expats — there is a large established expat community.
Tax
Malta has a flat 15% tax rate for qualifying non-domiciled residents on Malta-source income, with foreign income remitted to Malta taxed at 15%. Foreign income not remitted to Malta is not taxed in Malta. This makes Malta one of Europe's most tax-efficient residency options for those with international income. The Global Residence Programme (GRP) formalises this with a minimum tax of EUR 15,000/year.
Practical considerations
Malta is small (316 km²) — Valletta, Sliema and St Julian's are the main hubs. Cost of living is lower than most of Western Europe but higher than Eastern Europe. Driving is on the left (British influence). Internet is generally good but can be patchy in rural areas.
