Italy Digital Nomad Visa 2026 — The New EU Remote Work Route
Income requirements
You need to demonstrate income of at least EUR 28,000 per year (approximately EUR 2,333/month) from remote work or self-employment. The work must be carried out for companies or clients outside Italy, or for Italian companies as long as you are not employed by them.
Application process
Apply at the Italian consulate in your home country. Required documents: employment contract or proof of freelance income, bank statements showing sufficient funds, criminal record certificate, health insurance valid in Italy, and a signed declaration confirming your work is carried out remotely.
The visa is initially valid for one year and can be renewed for up to two additional years if you continue to meet the income requirements.
Flat tax regime — EUR 100,000
Italy offers one of the world's most unusual tax regimes for new residents: a flat EUR 100,000 annual tax on all foreign-source income, regardless of how much that income is. For high earners (above approximately EUR 500,000 in foreign income), this is extraordinarily attractive. For most digital nomads earning EUR 50,000–150,000, the standard Italian progressive tax rates (up to 43%) will likely apply — so get specific tax advice.
Best cities
Rome, Milan and Florence are the obvious choices. Bologna, Turin and Naples offer significantly lower cost of living with excellent quality of life. Sicily and Sardinia have specific incentives for new residents in some municipalities.
Italy vs Portugal vs Spain
Italy: most desirable lifestyle, highest bureaucratic complexity, EUR 100k flat tax best for very high earners. Portugal: clearest path to citizenship (5 years), NHR good for most income levels, lower cost. Spain: Beckham Law flat 24% for 6 years, easier to get around. All three are excellent — your choice depends on lifestyle preference and tax situation.
