Australia Working Holiday Visa 2026 — Subclass 417 and 462 Explained
The two visa types
Subclass 417 (Working Holiday): for citizens of passport agreement countries including UK, Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Cyprus, Malta, Estonia, Hong Kong and others.
Subclass 462 (Work and Holiday): for citizens of countries with bilateral Work and Holiday agreements including USA, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Philippines, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru and others. This visa may require a letter of support from your home country government.
Duration and extensions
First year: 12 months from date of grant. Second year: requires 3 months (88 days) of specified work in a regional area during your first year — agriculture, construction, mining, bushfire recovery. Third year: requires 6 months of specified work in a regional area during your second year.
What you can earn
There is no restriction on how much you earn. The national minimum wage is approximately AUD 24/hour (2026). Agricultural work often pays piece rates which can be higher. Tax is withheld at 15% for working holiday makers on the first AUD 45,000.
Eligible ages
Most countries: 18–30. Canada, France, Ireland: 18–35. Check the specific bilateral agreement for your country.
